Take-Home Sleep Study
Do you snore or wake up tired no matter how long you slept? Maybe your partner has noticed you stop breathing at night. Or maybe sleep isn't what brought you in at all; it's jaw pain, grinding, or headaches that won't let up.
Whatever the symptom, we look at the full picture before we treat anything. Sometimes that means recommending a take-home sleep study, so we understand what's happening while you rest.
If you've been looking into a home sleep study Melbourne clinics recommend, we see patients for sleep study assessments right here in Toorak.
Looking Past the Symptom
Breathing, sleep, jaw function and facial development don't operate in isolation. They're closely linked. Jaw pain, grinding, or a headache that returns often or keeps you awake can sometimes be traced to what's happening overnight, while you're asleep. Rather than fixing the symptom, we look for what's driving it. That way, we can treat the root cause.
Dentistry is important in this process. Teeth, jaw and facial development can reveal the earliest signs of an airway or sleep-related issue, sometimes well before a patient has connected the dots themselves.
Our approach includes:
- TMJ assessment
- Airway evaluation
- Sleep health
A home sleep study is one of the tools we use when it's clinically useful. It gives us objective data to work from, so any treatment plan we provide can be personalised to meet your specific needs.
What Is a Take-Home Sleep Study?
A take-home sleep study is a study that examines your sleep quality at home instead of in a hospital. Sometimes, it's referred to as a home sleep apnoea test (HSAT).
Conventional, hospital-based sleep studies are called polysomnography. Polysomnography cost is generally higher than at-home alternatives, and, because you have to sleep at the hospital, they can be inconvenient.

How We Assess You
You'll first need to have a discussion with our team. During the consult, you might bring up jaw pain or ongoing trouble with sleep. And together, we'll figure out if a sleep study is the right fit for you.
Not every patient needs one.
What the Sleep Study Involves
If a sleep study is the right next step, we'll give you a Somfit kit to take home. You'll find two small devices inside, and you can download the phone app and watch a few short videos explaining how to set things up. When you go to bed, you wear the devices and sleep as normal.
Previously, we referred patients to an outside provider. Now, the process is done entirely in-house, so you get your results more quickly and with less back and forth.
A note from Dr Julie Ghaly, Principal Dentist
"I did the sleep study myself. I was waking after eight or nine hours still feeling unrefreshed, and I wanted to know what was actually happening, my oxygen levels, interruptions to my sleep, any snoring or apnoea that needed treating. The kit is cleverly designed: two small devices and a phone that records the data, with short videos showing you how to set it up at home." — Dr Julie Ghaly, Principal Dentist
What Can a Sleep Study Diagnose?
It can diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea. In addition, the test also picks up how loud and frequent your snoring is and whether your oxygen levels dip through the night. For a dental clinic, that's valuable information; it might explain jaw pain or grinding we couldn't otherwise account for.
Signs You May Need a Sleep Study
- You might need a home sleep study Toorak patients can access if you experience any of the following:
- You snore loudly, most nights
- Someone's told you that you stop breathing while asleep
You wake up tired even after a full night's rest - Headaches greet you most mornings
- You're dragging by mid-afternoon, even on good sleep nights
- Jaw pain, clenching or grinding that hasn't gone away
Did you know? If you grind your teeth and you're simply given a grinding splint, it can actually make sleep apnoea worse. That's why we ask about your sleep and, where it's warranted, recommend a home sleep study, so we diagnose what's really happening before we treat it. — Dr Julie Ghaly, Principal Dentist
What Happens After Your Sleep Study?
After your sleep study, you will get an email. This shows that your study was successful.
From there, an Australian Sleep Physician goes through your results and puts together a report. That usually takes about two weeks to get back to us.
When it does, we'll call to set up a telehealth appointment, where a clinician sits down with you (virtually) to explain what your results mean and what we'd suggest doing next. This appointment is covered by the $290 fee you paid upfront. There is no extra cost to you.
How Much Does a Sleep Study Cost in Melbourne?
A take-home sleep study costs $290. This includes your telehealth appointment two weeks later, where we walk you through your results.
If you've been searching how much a sleep study costs in Australia and comparing options, this isn't something Medicare or private health insurance covers. $290 is the full amount, not a gap payment.
