Same-day crowns at Toorak Dental Studio
Toorak Dental Studio utilises CEREC technology, which uses 3D imaging software to design and manufacture dental restorations onsite.
During your appointment, we will take a digital scan of the prepared tooth to map its dimensions. Your dentist will then use the in-house milling unit to fabricate a custom crown based on these digital measurements.
The final step is to fit and cement the crown. This streamlined process allows the entire procedure to be completed in a single visit, eliminating the need for temporary crowns or return appointments.
Assessing Your Suitability
Efficiency and Convenience Single-visit crowns are an efficient option for patients wishing to complete their restorative treatment in one appointment. Our experienced Melbourne team can typically complete the design, fabrication, and placement in a single sitting, eliminating the need for a temporary crown.
Digital Precision Beyond convenience, CEREC technology utilises digital scanning, which eliminates the need for traditional impression materials (moulds). This digital workflow allows for a precise fit, aiming to create a durable restoration that matches the natural aesthetics of your smile.
Durable Same-day Crowns in a Single Visit
Our team is experienced in utilising modern digital technology to facilitate efficient restorative care. We use CEREC technology to design and mill crowns intended to match the profile and shade of your natural teeth.

What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are custom-made caps placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Designed as a durable solution for damaged or decayed teeth, dental crowns are crafted to mimic the appearance and function of a natural tooth.
Dental crowns are a key component of restorative dentistry and are typically fabricated from porcelain or ceramic materials for long-lasting results. A typical dental crown has an expected lifespan of five to 15 years, depending on oral hygiene and care, at which point it may need to be replaced or maintained.
What are same-day crowns?
Same-day crowns are dental restorations that are designed, manufactured, and fitted in a single visit. They are an efficient option for patients with busy schedules, or those who wish to minimise their time in the dental chair.
3D imaging technology is used to scan the mouth and measure the precise dimensions of the prepared tooth. An onsite milling unit then fabricates the crown from high-quality ceramic materials, closely following the digital scan to ensure the crown fits accurately and functions like a natural tooth.
Same-day crowns vs traditional crowns
Same-day crowns are growing in popularity due to their efficiency and the convenience of single-visit dentistry. Unlike traditional crowns, which require a physical impression and a temporary cap, same-day crowns are designed digitally.
Key Differences:
- Digital Precision: We use intraoral scanners to map the shape of your tooth, aiming for a precise fit without the need for uncomfortable impression paste.
- Single Visit: Traditional crowns require two appointments separated by weeks. Same-day crowns restore function and aesthetics in a single appointment, saving you time.
- No Temporary Crowns: Because the final restoration is milled onsite, you avoid the inconvenience of wearing a temporary crown while waiting for a laboratory.
Same-day crowns with CEREC
Toorak Dental Studio utilises CEREC technology to facilitate single-visit crown treatments. This system allows us to design, mill, and place your restoration in one appointment.
How it works: Instead of traditional putty impressions, we use digital 3D scans to capture the dimensions of the prepared tooth. The onsite milling unit then fabricates the crown from high-quality ceramic. This digital workflow aims to produce a restoration with a precise fit, restoring function and aesthetics efficiently.
What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It is a methodology within restorative dentistry that utilises CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) to create dental crowns and restorations.Using digital scanning technology, CEREC allows us to design and mill restorations onsite that are tailored to the specific dimensions of your tooth.Applications of CEREC: While primarily used for single-visit crowns, this technology can also be utilised to fabricate ceramic veneers, inlays/onlays, and implant-supported crowns.
How does the CEREC process work?
There are four key steps involved in creating a single-visit crown using CEREC technology.
1. Digital Impression (Your Scan) Upon arrival, your dentist will use an intraoral camera to take high-resolution 3D images of the prepared tooth. This digital process eliminates the need for traditional impression putty, offering a more comfortable experience for the patient.
2. Digital Design The 3D images are transferred to our onsite computer to create a virtual model of your restoration. The design software allows us to customise the shape and alignment to ensure the crown fits accurately with your opposing and adjacent teeth.
3. Onsite Milling Once the design is finalised, the data is sent to our in-house milling unit. The machine fabricates your custom crown from a high-quality ceramic block matched to the shade of your natural teeth. This milling process typically takes approximately 15 minutes.
4. Placement and Finishing The newly fabricated crown is polished and assessed for fit and aesthetics. Once you and your dentist are satisfied with the result, the crown is permanently cemented into place, and you will be provided with aftercare instructions
Benefits of Single-Visit Crowns
Single-visit crowns offer several advantages, particularly regarding efficiency and convenience.
Eliminates the need for temporary restorations A significant advantage of same-day crowns is the elimination of the temporary phase. With traditional methods, a temporary crown is worn for several weeks while the final restoration is fabricated. By completing the process in one visit, you avoid the inconvenience of a temporary cap and the need for a second appointment.
Efficient Restoration Same-day crowns are designed, milled, and fitted in a single appointment. If you require a single crown, the procedure can often be completed efficiently in one sitting. This is particularly beneficial for patients who have suffered sudden tooth fracture and require a prompt solution to restore function and aesthetics.
Durability and Precision Our CEREC crowns are milled from resilient ceramic blocks. With appropriate care and oral hygiene, these restorations are designed to offer long-term durability comparable to traditional ceramic crowns.
Additionally, the use of digital scanning technology allows for a precise fit. The crown is designed to align accurately with the prepared tooth structure, aiming to ensure comfort and functional occlusion (bite alignment).
Questions about Same-Day Crowns
Fees for CEREC crowns typically range between $1,500 and $2,000 per crown. This fee includes the digital design, fabrication material, and the clinical time required for placement. Costs vary depending on the complexity of the preparation and the specific material selected. In some cases, same-day crowns may be more cost-effective than traditional crowns as they eliminate the need for a second appointment and temporary restoration.
Same-day crowns are designed, milled, and fitted in a single appointment. The process involves a digital scan, 3D design, milling, and final cementation. The total appointment time generally ranges between 90 minutes and two hours per crown, depending on the complexity of the case.
Same-day crowns offer distinct advantages regarding efficiency and convenience.
- Time: They are fitted in a single visit, whereas lab crowns require a turnaround time of several weeks.
- Precision: Digital scanning allows for a precise fit without the need for impression putty.
- Quality: Modern ceramic blocks used in CEREC are highly durable. In terms of strength and aesthetics, they are comparable to many traditional laboratory-made crowns.
Clinical studies suggest that CEREC crowns have a similar longevity to traditional crowns, typically lasting between 10 to 15 years. With excellent oral hygiene and regular maintenance, they can last longer. Because they are milled from a single block of high-strength ceramic and designed to fit accurately, they are a reliable long-term restorative option.
CEREC crowns are milled from high-quality ceramic or resin blocks. The material is selected for its durability and aesthetics. We use a shade guide to select a colour that closely matches your adjacent teeth, aiming for a natural-looking appearance.
