Same-day crowns at Toorak Dental Studio
Toorak Dental Studio uses CEREC for our same-day crowns, an advanced technology that uses 3D imaging software to manufacture dental restorations more precisely than traditional techniques. When you come in for your appointment, we’ll begin by taking a scan of the mouth to map the dimensions of the teeth and create a digital replica of the crown. Your dentist will then use the in-house CEREC machine to craft the crown, following the exact measurements of the mock-up. The final step is to fit the crown, with the entire procedure complete within a couple of hours. You’re now ready to show off your new smile to the world!
Are you a good candidate?
Our same day crowns are a great option for patients who are busy and want to limit their visits to the dentist to a single trip. One-day crowns require less preparatory work than traditional crowns and therefore help to preserve the essential structure of your teeth. What are dental crowns?
Dental crowns are custom-made, tooth-coloured caps that are placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size or strength. A permanent solution for damaged or decayed teeth, dental crowns look, feel and function like the original tooth.
Dental crowns are a type of restorative dentistry and are generally made from porcelain and metal materials for long-lasting results. A typical dental crown lasts anywhere from five to 15 years, at which point it needs to be replaced.
What are same-day crowns?
Same-day crowns are dental crowns that are manufactured and fitted in a single visit to the dentist. They’re a great option for patients who are busy, get nervous at the dentist or simply want to see results as quickly as possible.
3D imaging technology is used to scan the mouth and measure the precise dimensions of the teeth. A machine then sculpts the crown using ceramic materials, closely following the digital scan so that the crown fits perfectly with the tooth.
Same-day crowns vs traditional crowns
Same-day crowns are growing in popularity, and their convenience isn’t the only advantage they have over traditional crowns. One-day crowns are also more comfortable and allow for a better bite, given that they mould perfectly to the profile of the teeth that they’re placed on.
In most cases, same-day crowns also require less preparation and drilling of the damaged tooth prior to application. This helps to maintain the structure of the underlying tooth, which in turn makes the crowns stronger and more resilient once they’re fitted.
While traditional porcelain crowns can only be fitted over separate appointments that could potentially span several weeks, same-day crowns restore function and aesthetics to teeth within the space of just a few hours.
Same-day crowns with CEREC
There are several different methods for performing same-day crown treatments, and CEREC leads the way. CEREC crowns can be applied without drilling into the teeth, which helps to preserve the structural integrity of the damaged tooth.
The crowns are constructed using digital scans of the patient’s teeth. A machine crafts the same-day crowns to fit the dimensions of the underlying tooth, ensuring a glove-like fit that provides optimal comfort and functionality for the patient.
What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. It’s a methodology within the field of restorative dentistry that draws on computer-aided design techniques to create dental crowns that fit perfectly with the profile of the underlying teeth.
Still, a relatively new methodology, CEREC as a dental practice is growing at a rapid pace, with CEREC equipment cropping up in dental clinics around the world. CEREC technology can be used to fabricate crowns as well as other restorations such as veneers and dental implants.
How does CEREC technology work?
There are a number of steps in the process of creating a same-day crown using CEREC technology. These are detailed below.
Your initial scan
When you come in for your appointment, your dentist will first take a scan of the mouth to map out the precise measurements of the teeth. A small camera is used to take 3D images of the tooth that requires treatments, with this only causing minimal discomfort to patients.
Crown concept
The 3D images are transferred onto a computer, which then creates a digital model of the required crown. The mock-up follows the exact dimensions of the tooth to ensure the right fit, and can also be customised in terms of colour for a natural look that fits with the other teeth.
Milling your crown
Once you’re happy with your crown concept, it’s time to bring your crown to life. Your dentist will use the in-house milling machine to sculpt your same-day crown out of blocks of ceramic. This step generally takes around 15 minutes per crown.
Finishing touches
The newly constructed crown is polished by your dentist and then compared with the rest of your teeth to ensure that the appearance matches. Once satisfied, your dentist will cement the crown into place. At this point, you’ll be provided with relevant aftercare guidance.
What are the benefits of single-day crowns?
Single-day crowns boast a number of key benefits, especially when compared with traditional porcelain crowns. You can read about these in detail below.
Eliminates the use of temporary crowns
One major advantage of same-day crowns is that at no point in the process are you required to wear temporary crowns. Temporary crowns are worn by patients while their permanent crowns are under construction, which can take several weeks.
Unlike permanent crowns, temporary crowns are not designed to fit the precise dimensions of the underlying tooth. As such, they’re prone to come loose and fall off. Patients with temporary crowns have to be especially careful when talking and eating to make sure this doesn't happen.
Restore your smile quicker
The obvious advantage of same-day crowns is that they can be designed and fitted within a single appointment. If you only need one crown fitted, the entire process can be completed within the space of an hour. Conversely, traditional crowns could take several weeks to be fitted.
This is good news if you suffer sudden or unexpected damage to your tooth and require an immediate fix. If there’s an important event on the horizon that you need to look your best for, same-day crowns will restore your smile within a matter of hours.
Strong and reliable
Our CEREC same-day crowns are made from resilient ceramic materials. These last an average of ten to 15 years, though with appropriate care they could last as long as 25 years. This level of durability is on par with traditional ceramic crowns.
In addition, CEREC same-day crowns benefit from a better fit. The crowns are designed to align with the exact profile of the underlying tooth. Not only does this make for greater comfort and a better bite, but it also means that same-day crowns are less likely to come loose.
Questions about same-day crowns
CEREC crowns in Melbourne Australia cost anywhere between $1,500 and $2,000 per crown. This cost covers the price of the ceramic materials and the operating costs of the CEREC equipment. The cost will vary depending on the location and condition of the affected tooth. Same-day crowns may still be cheaper than traditional porcelain crowns because they require only a single appointment.
Same-day crowns are fabricated and fitted in just a single appointment. The entire process consists of an initial digital scan, 3D modelling of the crown, milling of the crown and finally the fitting of the crown. This generally takes between one and two hours per crown, with the fitting of the crown likely to take the longest of all the various stages.
Same-day crowns have a number of advantages over lab crowns. Firstly, they can be fitted within a matter of hours rather than weeks. Secondly, they are designed to fit the exact profile of the underlying tooth, which makes for greater comfort and an improved bite. The durability and aesthetic performance of same-day crowns and lab crowns are also similar.
Same-day CEREC crowns have a typical life span of ten to 15 years. However, with appropriate care, these dental crowns can last as long as 25 years. This is because they are made of extremely durable ceramic materials and they are also designed to fit perfectly with the underlying tooth, thus reducing the risk of separation and other damage.
Same-day CEREC crowns are made of ceramic or resin materials. They are typically cut from a block of ceramic using a CEREC milling machine. The material is extremely durable, and its colour can be selected from a shade guide to find the colour that most closely matches the rest of the teeth for a natural appearance.
