What are dental veneers?
If you're unhappy with your smile's appearance but don't want braces or Invisalign, cosmetic dental veneers might be worth considering. Depending on the look you want and your budget, there are several veneer options available. But first: what are dental veneers?
Dental veneers are thin coverings or shells usually made from porcelain or composite resin. These shells are bonded over your teeth and fit closely, creating an improved appearance. Most people with good oral hygiene can consider veneers.
Are dental veneers right for you? They may be suitable if you have:
- Noticeably chipped, broken, or worn teeth
- Stains that can't be removed by whitening treatments
- Short or mismatched teeth
At Toorak Dental Studio, our dental veneers are designed to help you work towards your smile goals. Contact us today to find out if dental veneers may work for your situation.
Benefits of porcelain veneers
Enjoy many advantages porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers offer several potential benefits worth considering. Here are key aspects of this treatment:
- Custom Design: Everything about your veneers—shape, colour, and size—is customised specifically for you, designed to complement your natural teeth and facial features.
- Easy Maintenance: Beyond your regular brushing and flossing routine, porcelain veneers don't require additional maintenance procedures.
- What to Expect During Recovery: After placement, expect an adjustment period of several weeks. It's normal to experience some sensitivity, minor gum irritation, and bite adjustment during this time. Most patients can resume regular eating and drinking shortly after placement, though individual experiences differ.
- Treatment Duration: From your first consultation to final placement, the process typically takes 2 to 6 visits depending on your case. Once you decide to proceed, placing the veneers usually requires two or three appointments spread over a few weeks.
- Flexible Options: Veneers can address concerns with just one tooth, several visible teeth, or can be part of a broader smile enhancement plan. They work well alongside other treatments too—you might combine whitening with veneers to address both spacing and tooth colour concerns.
Composite vs Porcelain Veneers
What are composite veneers?
Composite veneers are an alternative to porcelain veneers or crowns, and can be applied in one sitting. Made from tooth-coloured resin, composite veneers use the same material as dental bonding. While they are less expensive than porcelain veneers, composite veneers may not last as long as their porcelain counterparts.
Composite veneers are minimally invasive and can be applied directly to your teeth (direct veneers) or custom-made outside of the mouth (indirect veneers). Due to the material used, they may need to be replaced or repaired more frequently than porcelain veneers.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin shells of porcelain material (though some veneers are made of composite resin). They're placed over existing teeth to enhance the appearance of the mouth – whether this is to improve the shape, shade, or address damaged teeth.
The application of porcelain veneers preserves the existing tooth structure while enhancing appearance by covering imperfections. They're popular amongst patients concerned about teeth that are crooked, discoloured, too small, have gaps, are uneven, or oddly shaped.
How are veneers put in?
Before you receive your porcelain dental veneers, you'll have an initial consultation with your dentist at Toorak Dental Studio to discuss your best option and how many veneers may be appropriate for your goals. During this visit, your dentist will also take x-rays to evaluate the health of your teeth, including checking for signs of tooth decay or gum disease.
Some patients may choose one veneer to address a broken or chipped tooth, while others opt for six to eight veneers to create a more uniform smile appearance. The most common location for veneers is the top front eight teeth.
At your next appointment, your dentist will prepare your tooth/teeth by removing approximately half a millimetre of enamel to take a mould, which will be sent to the dental laboratory to create your custom porcelain veneers. During this period, you'll receive temporary veneers to wear.
After approximately two weeks when your veneers have returned from the laboratory, you'll schedule an appointment for placement. Your dentist will thoroughly clean your teeth and prepare the tooth surface to ensure proper bonding. Then, dental cement is applied to bond the veneer to your tooth, and an ultraviolet light is used to cure the cement. Following placement, there's typically a brief adjustment period as you adapt to your new veneers.
What do teeth look like under veneers?
Dental veneers require permanent preparation of your natural teeth. During the preparation process, your dentist removes approximately 0.5mm of enamel from the front surface of your teeth. This preparation is irreversible - once enamel is removed, your teeth will always require veneers or alternative restoration to protect them.
After veneer placement, your prepared teeth sit beneath the veneers. While you won't see the prepared tooth structure, it's important to understand that your natural teeth have been permanently altered to accommodate the restorations.
To maximise the longevity of your veneers, maintain thorough oral hygiene by brushing twice daily and flossing once daily. Regular dental examinations and professional cleanings every six months are essential. Even with excellent care, veneers typically need replacement every 10-15 years due to normal wear, potential chipping, or changes in the bond between the veneer and tooth. Individual results vary based on your oral habits, bite forces, and overall dental health.
Direct vs indirect veneers
Direct composite veneers and indirect composite veneers are cosmetic procedures and an alternative to porcelain veneers.
Direct veneers are sculpted and bonded to your teeth during a single appointment. Your dentist applies composite resin material directly to the tooth surface, shaping it layer by layer. Depending on your case, some enamel removal may be required, though in certain situations direct veneers can be placed with minimal to no tooth preparation. When enamel is removed, this change is permanent. A single appointment typically takes 1-3 hours for multiple teeth.
Indirect veneers are custom-made outside your mouth, either in your dentist's office using digital technology or in a dental laboratory. This process follows a similar approach to porcelain veneers. Your teeth are prepared during the first appointment (which typically involves permanent enamel removal), and temporary veneers are placed to protect your teeth. At your next appointment, usually 1-2 weeks later, your custom veneers are ready to be permanently bonded.
Composite veneers generally last 5-7 years before requiring replacement, compared to 10-15 years for porcelain veneers. The composite material is more susceptible to staining and chipping than porcelain.
Common questions about dental veneers
Porcelain dental veneers are durable, typically lasting 10-15 years, though individual results vary. Replacement may be needed when:
- The veneer cracks, chips, or fractures
- The underlying tooth develops decay or damage
- The bonding cement weakens or fails, causing looseness
- You want to change the veneer shade (porcelain veneers are resistant to whitening treatments and must be replaced to alter their color)
Regular dental examinations help detect veneer problems early and maximize their lifespan.
The porcelain veneer process typically takes 2-3 weeks from start to finish, requiring two to three main appointments.
Modern dental materials and techniques allow porcelain veneers to achieve natural-looking results in many cases. Well-designed veneers can blend with your natural teeth, though the degree of naturalness varies between patients and depends on several factors including your underlying tooth color, gum contours, how many teeth are being treated, and whether veneers are being matched to existing natural teeth.
At Toorak Dental Studio, we work with you during the planning phase to select an appropriate shade that complements your complexion and achieves your aesthetic goals. Many patients find that choosing a shade slightly lighter than their natural teeth creates a fresh, brightened appearance while maintaining realism. However, shade selection is ultimately a personal choice, and we'll guide you through options that suit your preferences and facial features.
Results vary between individuals, and the final appearance depends on your unique dental anatomy and the interplay between the veneers and your natural oral structures.
Invisalign and porcelain veneers serve different purposes and work in fundamentally different ways.
Invisalign physically moves your teeth into better positions over 6-18 months without permanently altering tooth structure. Porcelain veneers create the cosmetic appearance of straighter teeth by bonding thin shells over your existing teeth, which remain in their original positions. Veneers require permanent enamel removal and work best for mild to moderate cosmetic concerns.
For most patients, one approach is more appropriate than the other based on individual needs. Some cases benefit from orthodontics first, followed by veneers to address remaining aesthetic concerns. However, getting Invisalign after veneers is complicated, aligners may not fit properly over veneers, and movement can damage or debond them.
We'll evaluate your specific situation and recommend the most suitable treatment approach during your consultation.
Porcelain and composite dental veneers are cosmetic restorations that improve the appearance of teeth with various aesthetic concerns.
Veneers can address:
- Discolored or stained teeth
- The appearance of crooked or misaligned teeth (masking, not straightening)
- Short, uneven, or mismatched teeth
- Gaps, chips, or irregular tooth shapes
Veneers cover the front surface of teeth with thin shells of material, changing how they look. They typically require permanent enamel removal and need replacement every 5-15 years. Suitability varies by individual—your dentist will evaluate whether veneers are appropriate for your case.
To help maximize the lifespan of your dental veneers, follow these protective care practices:
- Avoid chewing on hard objects such as pens, ice, fingernails, or hard candies
- Try not to use your front teeth to bite into very hard or tough foods (use your back teeth instead, or cut food into smaller pieces)
- If you grind or clench your teeth during sleep, wear a custom night guard to protect your veneers from excessive forces
- Wear a mouthguard during contact sports or physical activities where facial impact is possible
Even with excellent care, veneers have a limited lifespan. Porcelain veneers typically last 10-15 years, while composite veneers generally last 5-7 years before requiring replacement due to normal wear and material breakdown.
The cost of porcelain veneers varies depending on your individual treatment needs, the complexity of your case, and how many teeth are being treated. As a general guide, porcelain veneers at Toorak Dental Studio typically range from $1,500 to $2,500 per tooth.
Factors affecting cost include:
- The number of teeth requiring treatment
- The extent of preparation needed
- Laboratory fees for custom veneer fabrication
- Any preliminary treatments required (such as addressing decay or gum issues)
For an accurate quote tailored to your specific situation, we invite you to book a consultation at our clinic. During this appointment, your dentist will assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and provide a detailed treatment plan with transparent pricing.
Composite veneers are generally more affordable than porcelain veneers. At Toorak Dental Studio, composite veneers typically cost between $250 and $1,000 per tooth, depending on the complexity of your case and the number of teeth being treated.
Factors affecting cost include:
- The number of teeth requiring treatment
- The extent of tooth preparation needed
- Whether direct or indirect composite veneers are used
- Any preliminary dental work required
For an accurate quote tailored to your specific situation, speak with the dentists at Toorak Dental Studio. During your consultation, we'll assess your teeth, discuss your goals, and provide detailed pricing for your individual treatment plan.
While Medicare doesn’t cover porcelain veneers and other cosmetic dentistry treatments, some healthcare providers may cover some of the cost. This depends on your policy and level of cover, and you may be required to upgrade to a more comprehensive plan to include cosmetic dental treatments.
Remember that, if you do change policies, there may be a waiting period involved before you’re able to claim back any of the costs of your teeth veneers.
