The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) is a MediCare-run scheme that provides $1000 over two years for dental expenses, for eligible children. CDBS covers check-ups, dental cleaning, repairing cracked teeth, fillings and root canals, but doesn’t cover orthodontic treatment and some other specialised treatments.
To be eligible, children must be between 2 and 17 years old, and must be in a family that already receives other government benefits.
It is recommended that you take your child for their first dental visit when their first tooth erupts or when they reach 12 months of age, whichever comes first. It is important to get them accustomed to the dental environment from an early age; even if your child has few teeth, we can assess that their gums and mouth are healthy.
Your dentist can help instil good habits, such as brushing techniques and managing thumb sucking, and will discuss nutritional advice to reduce the risk of decay. It is beneficial to choose a dentist who is experienced in children's dental care and passionate about oral health education.
The first adult teeth typically emerge between the ages of 6 and 10. During this stage, our dentists will monitor your child's development to determine if an orthodontic assessment is required.
Early assessment allows us to detect and manage issues such as overbites, misalignments, and crowded teeth as they develop. Your child’s appointment will involve an X-ray and a thorough examination of their teeth, gums, and jaw. Following this, we will discuss whether orthodontic treatment may be required and provide a tailored treatment plan.
