Tooth Extractions

Dental Extractions Toorak

If a tooth is severely damaged, decayed, or affected by infection, extraction may be the most appropriate course of action to prevent further complications.

At Toorak Dental Studio, our priority is to preserve natural teeth whenever possible. However, in cases where extraction is clinically necessary, we are committed to ensuring the procedure is performed efficiently and with minimal discomfort.

Patient Comfort & Care We prioritise patient comfort and have protocols in place to manage anxiety and sensitivity during treatment. For relief from dental pain, please contact us to schedule an assessment.

Common Questions about Tooth Extraction

Removal of a tooth is often unavoidable when damage or infection is severe. It is natural to feel pressure during the procedure, but the intensity depends on the complexity of the extraction. We minimise discomfort using local anaesthesia to thoroughly numb the area. For patients experiencing anxiety, sedation options are available to assist in relaxation. Please speak to your dentist if you are feeling concerned.

There are generally two types of extractions: simple and surgical. A surgical extraction is required when a tooth is not easily visible or is broken below the gum line. This involves your dentist making a small incision in the gum to access and remove the tooth. Depending on the complexity, this may be performed under local anaesthetic, IV sedation, or via referral for general anaesthesia.

Following an extraction, it is normal to experience some bleeding. A blood clot usually forms within 20 to 30 minutes of applying firm pressure (biting on gauze). Minor oozing may persist for up to 24 hours. To assist healing, follow our aftercare instructions, which include taking recommended pain relief, avoiding rinsing for 24 hours, and maintaining pressure on the site with gauze if bleeding recurs. If heavy bleeding persists, please contact us immediately.

While many adults do not require extractions, it is sometimes necessary to remove teeth to alleviate overcrowding or correct a severe bite discrepancy. Every patient is different. We explore all options to preserve natural teeth where appropriate. However, if extraction is required to achieve a functional and aesthetic orthodontic outcome, we will incorporate this into your tailored treatment plan.

Indications for Tooth Extraction

If a tooth is severely decayed or damaged, and restorative options such as fillings or crowns are not viable, your dentist may advise extraction. Similarly, in cases of severe infection or overcrowding, removing a tooth may be the most appropriate course of action to preserve your oral health.

Delaying treatment can often lead to further complications, so we encourage you to book a consultation to assess and manage your dental concerns.
