Like all technology in the last 100 years, dentistry has come a long way. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a change in how we feel about it. Education and expanding our common knowledge of personal hygiene have been immensely beneficial in helping both children and adults become more proactive and conscientious about daily habits.
But what if knowing better doesn’t make it any less uncomfortable?
Anxiety is a natural response and a universal experience. While we might be afraid of different things, the feelings are often the same. It is involuntary, which can be daunting on its own—but that doesn’t mean it can’t be managed!
Here are some things we’d like those with dental anxiety to know:
- You are not alone.
- We understand. Though we may be necessary, we might not be your favourite place in the world.
- We want to help.
- Do not be afraid to start the conversation about your needs.
If you’re looking to make a positive change but aren’t sure how to go about it, here are a few things to look for in a dentist or dental practice to ensure you get the understanding and support you deserve.
What to Look for in a Practice as an Anxious Patient:
-
Pace of the Practice:
Many patients appreciate a “get in, get out” approach to dental treatment. However, this may not be the right environment if you’re looking for a little TLC. Look for practices and practitioners who take their time with you, getting to know you and your needs. -
Willingness to Accommodate Your Needs:
- Do they offer sleep dentistry?
- Is the practice accessible?
- What kind of support do they provide for anxious or dental-phobic patients?

So You’ve Booked Your Appointment. What Now?
-
Celebrate! You’ve taken the first (and hardest) step in the right direction, and that’s worth celebrating!
-
Acknowledge Your Feelings:
It is perfectly okay and normal to be nervous. We are here to help—and more importantly, we are on your team. We understand how difficult it is to put yourself in the uncomfortable position of seeking help, and we support you. -
Start the Conversation About Your Needs:
Sometimes, talking about your fears makes them smaller. We are here to work with you to find what suits you best. There are many strategies to help you through intense experiences. -
Provide Feedback:
We understand everyone is different, and there is no “one size fits all” approach to managing dental anxiety. Let us know what you liked, what helped, and what could be improved. Speaking up can help us refine our approach and support many others like you. You are our textbook.
Our Commitment at Toorak Dental Studio:
As a highly skilled and experienced team, TDS strives to maintain control over every situation while reassuring you that your big feelings won’t disrupt that. You are not an inconvenience, and we are confident we can work together to achieve what is best for your oral health.

Because Dr. Julie has focused on TMJ disorders (which can be caused and exacerbated by stress!), she deeply understands how life pressures and internal struggles contribute to our relationship with our teeth and overall health.
